what is it you work for?

Gal 6:7-10 “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

What is it that I work for? I sometimes have to step back and say, “No, I don’t always keep my eyes on the future good that I will gain when I work for the Lord.” Undoubtedly, my driving motivation is for God, but it’s funny that our own self-interest gets mixed into it as well. Do we sow to the flesh — to satisfy the human lusts, ambitions, and desires — more than we’d like to admit? Are we willing to wait for those good things or do we want cheap and instant gratification? I’m not saying that our desires are always illegitimate, but it is good to reexamine them once in a while to see if they are in alignment with Kingdom values.

Who doesn’t grow weary of doing good? Though I’d like to say that doing good is its own reward, I think it’s safe to say that this is not always the case. When we remind ourselves that our efforts will not be in vain, it helps to drive us to doing good… but it takes self-discipline and exertion on our part keep focused on that goal. Perhaps that is simply part of the cross which we must bear.

Really, right now I’m just weary of school, and I have to keep reminding myself of the long-term goal. =)
